5 Incredible Foot Care Tips for Hikers: How to Keep Your Feet Safe

Posted on September 8, 2015 by Matt Behnke

iStock_000018038377_SmallHiking is an amazing activity, and, as things begin to cool down, now is the perfect time to go. You don’t have to be a major hiker to enjoy this activity.

In fact, there are many trails out there for beginners, giving everyone the chance to enjoy a beautiful hike.

Before you head out, however, you need to make sure you follow some awesome foot care tips for hikers to ensure your feet stay healthy. Let’s take a look at a few of these tips, and help you enjoy your next hike pain-free!

5 Excellent Foot Care Tips for Hikers

These foot care tips for hikers will really help when it comes to avoiding pain or injury when hiking. Let us know your suggestions for other hikers, too!

  1. Wear the Correct Boots

One of the most important foot care tips for hikers is to wear the correct boots. Wearing the right boots can make or break a hiking experience.

If your boots are not right for the type of hike you are doing, or if they do not fit well, you will be susceptible to blisters and injuries. Do some research into the various boots and find the best ones for you.

You can also contact your podiatrist to see what he or she suggests for your hike, and you can get excellent orthotic hiking boots, as well.

  1. Make Sure to Break in Your Boots Before Your Hike

Once you’ve found the right hiking boots, you shouldn’t immediately head out to hike. In fact, another integral foot care tip for hikers is to break your boots in.

You can do this by walking around your home or backyard with them, wearing them when you go to the grocery store, and any other less strenuous activity. This will break the shoes in without you putting a lot of strain on your feet.

  1. Wear Good Socks When Hiking

Another important aspect to hiking foot care is to wear good socks that are right for the hike you are on. Depending on your activity, the socks you will need will range from moisture-wicking to breathable and also cold weather socks.

Know what you need, buy them, and wear them when you break in your hiking boots to ensure you get the best out of the socks.

  1. Always Rest Your Feet to Keep Them Safe

When you go hiking, you obviously want to keep walking and exploring. However, this can be bad for your feet. Instead, make sure you take regular breaks to keep your feet healthy and safe.

If you are starting out for the first time, make sure to take regular breaks around every thirty minutes. The more you hike, the longer you can wait until rests. This is also a great time to eat some granola and boost your energy with food and water.

  1. Trim Your Toenails to Avoid Cuts

A big danger many people do not consider is their feet getting cut by their toenails. When you go for a hike, you should always make sure you are trimming and managing your nails to keep your skin safe.

A cut when out on a hike can be detrimental and cause you significant pain. And the cut can also become infected. It is always wise to carry a first aid kit with you, in case something like this does happen.
